Ferruginous hawks live in plains and prairies, including here in Kansas. They are currently threatened, with fewer than 4,000 remaining due to shooting and habitat loss. This painting depicts their nests which amazingly are often between 20’ - 50’ above the ground, in the tops of trees. Female hawks remains with young at first; male brings food, female feeds it to the young. After about 3 weeks, both parents hunt.
